How To care For The Leopard Gecko
What's It's Name:The scientific name for the leopard gecko is Eublepharis macularius(Etymology: Eu=good,true/blephar=eyelid/macularius=spotted)
Distributation:The Leopard Gecko is commonly found in Afghanistan,Northwest India,and Pakistan.
Size:Adult Leopard Geckoes can have a maximum lenght ofjust over 8 inches.Hatchlings have a total lenght of 3 1/4 - 3 1/2.
Sexing:The male leopard gecko has 10-13 enlarged pre-anal pores and they are overall more heavey bodied.Females don't have enlarged pre-anal pores but have pits.
Growth Rate:Hatchlings whiegh about2.5g-3g.Adults whiegh about 45g-60g but can attain a whieght of 100g.Young adults can breed at 30-35g.Adult size can be reached at 18 months.
Longevity:Leopard Geckoes are hardy geckoes and can live up to 17-20 years.
Selecting An Enclosure:The most common enclosure is a all-glass tank , at least a 10 gallon tank.Some people use Tubb-a-ware as an enclosure ,but you don't have the benifent of viewing your gecko.
Screen Tops:The Leopard Gecko is not very likley to escape but it is recommended,so that it keeps household pets and younger children out.
Floor Covering:In the wild Leopard Geckoes are found in a rocky and sandy environment.If you would like you can imatate thier natural environment by using sand like T-Rex or Calci-sand and adding in some rocks that will not crush your gecko.You may also use newspaper,paper towel,or astro-turf.Never use play sand because it may cause sand impaction and your gecko will die.
Shelters:Leopard Geckoes need shelters because they are noctural because they need a place to hide and sleep so they feel a sense of comfort and don't feel like they are being watched.
Heat/Light:Leopard geckoes need a form of light and heat.To accomplish this you can use a incandescent bulb for light and heat if you live in the cooler part of the country you might want to use a heat pad or heat tape.WARNING:NEVER USE A HEAT ROCK BECAUSE IT MAY CAUSE THERMAL BURNS ON YOUR GECKO!!!
Humidity:To shead properly Leopard Geckoes needto have their cage misted once or twice a week.You may also use frog moss under the hide and mist it daily.
Food/water:Leopard geckoes can eat Crickets,Mealworms,Waxworms,and Superworms.You need to do the shake and bake meathod and dust the food with a multi-vitamin and feed your gecko accordingly.Don't give your gecko food any bigger than it's head or it will choke.Give your gecko fresh clean water every day.Remember to Gut load your crickets 24-48 hrs. before feeding.You can use carrots,bran cereal,patatoes and greens.
